After School Programs at SEA

offer families the flexibility of engaging and meaningful care for their children when the school day ends. With a variety of options from 3:25 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., many families take advantage of these programs and students are eager to spend additional time with classmates and friends.

Extended Day

During Extended Day, students enjoy a snack, work on homework, and spend time with friends. 
 
Extended Day staff members supervise the completion of homework and can provide some learning support. Students who have music instruction or formal tutoring outside of Extended Day are escorted to their lessons at the appropriate times and can return to Extended Day upon completion. Extended Day staff members make every attempt to take children outside to play every day. In the winter, students with boots, a warm jacket, and appropriate outdoor accessories can play outside unless it’s extremely cold, and they even enjoy playing in the snow with appropriate weatherproof gear. 
 
Extended Day is open to students in Preschool – 6th Grade and offers a daily and half-daily rate. 

SEA Explorers

Families who enroll their children in our Extended Day Program have the opportunity to choose SEA Explorers enrichment experiences to extend learning and enhance the after school experience. SEA Explorer classes range from athletic instruction and cooking classes, to travelling programs from Pittsburgh institutions such as Phipps Conservatory and the Pittsburgh Zoo.  

Since SEA Explorers enrichment classes happen at varying times after school, many families enroll their children in the Extended Day program and select SEA Explorers courses as enhancements to the Extended Day experience.  Children are escorted to and from Extended Day to SEA Explorers courses based on each family’s choice. Class schedules change each trimester, and prices vary based on the class.

  • Monday SEA Explorers Courses

    Mixed Media and Sculpture
    Sculpt, collage, print and more! Students will explore their creativity and learn a variety of hand building methods to create unique artworks and sculptures. Young artists will experiment with different materials and mediums and use their imagination for endless artistic possibilities!

    Mini Books,
    Join me to explore the art of book making.  In this class, we will use a variety of materials and colorful papers to create a series of minibooks.  These books will be small enough to fit into your back pocket and cute enough to give as a gift to a friend.   We will have fun utilizing painting, printmaking, and origami techniques to embellish our books.  The finished books can be used to write down ideas, record feelings, or make drawings.  Come have fun with me while making art!

    Drills, Skills, and Thrills
    Students will explore, learn, and compete in various sports. Each week students will focus on a different sport or recreational activity that will be a joy for all involved. Come out and compete in the thrilling world of sports!

    Brain Games
    Students will challenge their minds to think in different ways as they enjoy cards, skill games such as such as Qwirkle, Mastermind, Sequence, Connect 4, jigsaw puzzles and mind benders.

    S.E.A. Scouts
    Students will earn badges each week as they try a variety of activities ranging from bird
    identification, making animal balloons, and setting up a tent! Students will receive a canvas tote and badges. We will attach the badges to the tote upon earning them each week.

    Diversified Delectables
    See what blooming baking ideas we have in store for Winter/Spring 2022! Our baking classes provide opportunities for hands-on knowledge, math, science, and cultural experiences while having fun. Join us as we play in the kitchen and use food to explore various cultures and communities around the world.

    Fencing
    En garde! Students will work on their overall fitness, footwork, technique, etiquette, and more. We will have fun learning and competing in fencing games and activities. No prior experience is needed to participate.

    Emerging Poets
    Students will read poems and learn about the meaning, imagery, and poetic techniques such as rhyme, alliteration, and line breaks that each poem contains. During class, students will write their own poems based on a prompt inspired by the work they have studied that day. Students will share their writing and explore the connections they share.

    Mindful World
    Students enrolled in Mindful World will learn how to integrate mindfulness and art into their lives. Each class will focus on a particular value such as compassion, honesty, or peacemaking and a different country’s traditions from India to Ghana to Denmark. Each session includes a world folktale, a different style of mindfulness practice and a take home art activity.

    Activ-ism in Sports
    Students will research the history of activism in sports and see how things have stayed the same and/or changed. Using their platform is important and we are excited to see how athletes big and small are taking a stand against injustice everywhere. After this research, students will learn and enjoy the same game the sports activist participated in.

    Lights, Camera, ACTION!!! Students in this course will learn how to apply to basic camera skills, the elements of art and principles of design, landscape, low-light scenes, motion, and portraiture.

    Draw, Paint, and Sculpt
    Students will explore their creativity while learning about renowned artists from around the world. Using a range of 2D and 3D materials, these young artists will make their very own artworks as they learn about color, design, and composition. This is a perfect class for both beginners looking to experiment and students who already have knowledge of making masterpieces.

    E-Sports
    By exploring the growing field of esports, students will develop skills for recreation and competitive play. The skills practiced and polished over the course of the program will prepare students for a multi-week tournament which will crown a final winner. Gamers of all levels are welcome.

    Kung Fu
    Students will have the opportunity to learn amazing self-defense moves and forms that you only see in movies like Kung Fu Panda, Karate Kid, Jackie Chan, and Jet Li.  Students will also gain confidence, discipline and respect through Chinese martial arts training.

    Young Novelist
    Students enrolled in Young Novelist will read and write various genres of literature. From fantasy to non-fiction, our Young Novelists will explore who they are as a writer. Students will work on writing their own short stories, children's books, and newspaper/magazines.

    Advanced Chess
    Students will experience chess in the form of lessons, games and competition. Chess combines concentration, planning, and forward thinking with playing and competing against an opponent. Each week, prepared lessons and exercises strengthen each student’s knowledge of chess. After many weeks of practice and stimulating chess games, the class will have a mini chess tournament with prizes for top players.

    LOL Dolls
    OMG...Dolls! Join us as we explore the wonderful world of LOL Dolls. From playing and learning about the dolls themselves to creating various LOL crafts, students will become immersed in the latest youth craze.

    From creating their own Olympic torches to participating and competing in Olympic games, students will explore what it is like to be a S.E.A. Olympian!

    Panda Pals: Learn Mandarin Chinese
    This class will introduce students to the core elements of Chinese language through lessons built around games, activities, movement and stories. Students will progress through the course learning pronunciation, vocabulary, reading, writing, and listening, and will gain confidence in their ability to learn Chinese. Class will also feature interactive video and audio to help build language and cultural fluency.
