Our Approach

At SEA our promise to you is clear: your child will be known, valued, and challenged, to become a virtuous person and an outstanding student. Some of the practices in place to ensure we deliver on this promise include:

Belonging & Relationships

A child’s ability to fulfill their potential rests upon a foundation of psychological safety created by accepting and supportive relationships. At every level, our Faculty and Staff prioritize building individual relationships with students and their parents. Our small classes allow our teachers to give each student and their parents individualized attention while cultivating relationships among students that respect and appreciate everyone’s unique talents and backgrounds.

Consistent with our Core Values Respect for the needs and feelings of others and Understanding and appreciation of the differences among people, classroom instruction emphasizes social-emotional learning and cross-cultural understanding, competencies critical for ensuring that every child feels safe and valued and knows how to effectively communicate and collaborate in our diverse and inclusive community and the world beyond our campus.

Academic Excellence

Consistent with our Core Value The value of setting high standards in all endeavors, St. Edmund’s Academy students are challenged at every grade level to grow as critical thinkers, precise communicators, and flexible problem solvers. Each classroom experience is based on curricula and instructional practices rooted in cognitive science and best practices in the academic discipline. Our rigorous curriculum, delivered by expert and supportive teachers, equips our graduates with the knowledge, skills, and habits to thrive at an array of secondary schools and beyond.

Creative Expression & Movement

At St. Edmund’s Academy we believe that artistic pursuits are as vital to human flourishing as academic knowledge. Throughout the Preschool through 8th Grade experience, students have frequent opportunities to practice visual art, music, and theater. In Preschool through 4th Grade students perform two choral concerts per year and one musical theater production. They also present their visual artwork in our annual Spring Symposium. Our 5th through 8th Graders continue to participate in the arts with all students studying a visual art medium each year and having their opportunity to participate in chorus and band. Upper School students also have the opportunity to participate in two theater productions each year, the fall play and spring musical.

Movement is also a vital developmental need of children and as a result all students have physical education classes at least once weekly and daily recess. St. Edmund’s Academy fields teams in six sports with the opportunity to join a team coming as early as 2nd Grade.

Time Outside

Whether working in one of our vegetable gardens, walking through our neighborhood to one of the nearby parks, or playing on the Playdeck, time outside is a big part of the day. In Early Childhood classes, students are normally outside two or three times a day. In Lower and Upper School, in addition to daily recess outside, Faculty members look for frequent opportunities to use the Outdoor Classroom…or to simply make the outdoors a classroom!
